Home-Start Orkney

Visitors to the library may have noticed a cheerful display of material about Home-Start Orkney, who are looking for more volunteers, particularly in Stromness and the West Mainland.

Home- Start is a national charity that recruits and trains volunteers to help families with young children. Volunteers who understand what it is like to be a parent, offer support to other parents by visiting them at home for a couple of hours each week. Families may approach Home-Start for support for many reasons and the charity will help any parent who asks for help - supported families, as well as volunteers, come from all walks of life.

If you would like to offer your time and parenting experience to help other families then why not find out more about volunteering with Home-Start Orkney?

Pick up a leaflet from the library or contact Home-Start Orkney by email at postmaster@homestartorkney.org.uk or visit the Home-Start website to find out more about the charity and its work.

And if you are a parent of young children (at least one child under five) and you feel you would benefit from some extra support, help, advice or friendship, then contact Home-Start and they will listen to your needs and help to match you with a suitable volunteer. As their leaflet says "There is no rulebook for raising a family", and sometimes a little extra support can make a big difference.

Woolly New Year!

Did you miss us?
Although the library has been open since 3rd January this blog had to take an unexpectedly extended holiday   so we are just catching up with 2013.

Our first Yap and Yarn meeting was a great success and our next meeting is on Monday 21st January, so why not come along  between 5-7pm and beat the chilly weather by making yourself something warm and woolly.

All ages and levels of experience are welcome - there will be help on hand to get you started, solve problems, share tips and advice and enjoy a good blether over a cup of tea or coffee. We also have lots of knitting and crochet books available to borrow,  so whether you're looking for a special pattern or want to learn a new technique, we have something to suit all abilities and tastes.

We're looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on - and will be bringing along our own project as Santa left lots of lovely yarn in our stocking.
